FAQ chalk paint

What is chalk paint and what is it used for?
yellowchair® chalk paint is a high-quality, mineral-based paint. It can be diluted with water and contains no plasticizers or solvents. We use potassium water glass as a binder. The colors contain a high proportion of chalk and offer high opacity. The low-odour paint is environmentally friendly and free of VOCs. yellowchair® chalk paint is a wall and furniture paint in one pot. It is open to diffusion and has a high pH value. This is particularly important in contemporary interior design or in rooms with high humidity. Chalk paint is also used to paint furniture and when using structural rollers. However, the color can also be applied to many other materials as mentioned below.
Is a primer necessary before applying the chalk paint?
In general, a primer is not necessary. When working on some types of wood such as mahogany and oak, a primer in the form of an isolating primer is recommended, as wood ingredients could bleed through on these types of wood. This would result in discoloration.
Do I need to specially prepare the surface of the object?
Untreated wood does not require any special preparation. If your furniture is varnished or glazed, it is recommended to apply a test coat of chalk paint before the first coat and to carry out a scratch test after a day's drying time. You can then determine whether the paint will adhere well enough or whether light sanding is required. Before the first coat of paint, the piece of furniture should be freed from dirt and dust. For this I offer the yellowchair® basic cleaner, which is simply sprayed on and wiped off with a paper towel.
How many times do I have to paint the object with chalk paint?
Dark colors usually require fewer coats than light colors. With a double coat you get a richer surface appearance. A one-off application with a sponge or cloth also gives beautiful effects.
Do I need a special brush?
I offer brushes made by hand in Germany. However, in principle any brush that is not too hard and not too soft can be used. But don't save on the brush and buy a high-quality brush that feels good in your hand. These make it easier to paint and often produce a better result. Hog bristle brushes give a more defined brush stroke. Use plastic bristles when you don't want to see the brush stroke of the paint. The paint can also be applied with a roller. Please note, however, that chalk paint always leaves a structure visible. The texture of the brushstroke or brush suits the style of the paint and is recommended when applied to the wall.
How long do I have to let the paint dry?
Chalk paint apparently dries very quickly. However, you should only apply the second coat after a drying time of 12 hours. You should wait 24 hours before sealing the color of the furniture with wax or varnish.
Does chalk paint need to be sealed? If yes how?
It is advisable to seal chalk paint on the piece of furniture if the piece is going to be used. Wax is most suitable and is applied with a sponge, brush or cloth. Lacquer should be used for sealing on heavily used surfaces such as shelves or floors or heavily used table surfaces.
What materials can I use chalk paint on?
yellowchair® chalk paint is a high-quality wall and furniture paint. However, it can also be applied to polystyrene, concrete, cardboard, metal and, for decorative purposes, to glass or plastic. Chalk paint is also the color that is mostly used for pattern rollers - and therefore on the wall.
Can I also use chalk paint outdoors?
yellowchair® chalk paint is an interior paint. It can be used for decorative purposes and with additional protection such as the impregnating paint protection on mineral substrates or a boat paint on wood outdoors. For example, the chalk paint does not contain any wood preservatives and should therefore not be used for long-lasting outdoor objects.
